Nubia – a narrow strip of inhabitable land along the Nile River, almost imperceptible amidst the endless desert. A place of special charm, where sand dunes line the walls of picturesque mudbrick houses and stars cast their light on the silhouettes of palm groves surrounding old, dilapidated forts.
Kush, as the territory was originally known, became the centre of powerful empires during the third millenium BC. The era of ancient civilisations was followed by an epoch of medieval Christian kingdoms, the arrival of Arab tribes and the spread of Islam. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the region became integrated into an Anglo-Egyptian condominium.
Finally, in 1956, Nubia was divided into two territories, of which one fell to Egypt, the other to the newly proclaimed Republic of the Sudan.
